Blackforest Blockhead

This is my take on the Moskow Mule; replacing the vodka with gin, and the ginger beer with (fresh) ginger and (real) beer – with dramatic results! While the Moskow Mule is a decent drink, it is really a boozed-up ginger beer, with little connection between the ingredients. Gin and ginger, on the other hand, they intensify each other; and the beer gives a welcome bitterness that makes this drink more refreshing still.

In Rivington, we use Monkey 47 gin and the Rothaus ‘Zäpfle, both of which come from the Black Forest region in Germany – hence the name. I feel it captures the quirky-ness of this drink very well.

Blackforest Blockhead
  1. 50 ml gin (Monkey 47)
  2. 30 ml fresh lime juice
  3. 20 ml rich sugar syrup (2:1)
  4. 30 ml slighly bitter Pils (Rothaus Pils Tannenzäpfle)
  5. 2 slices fresh ginger
  1. Muddle ginger, shake with all ingredients except for beer. Add beer to shaker, then fine-strain into tumbler on the rocks.
